What do you think of Stephen Colbert's satirical bid for the U.S. Presidency?
Why he wants a job even less reputable than stand-up basic cable comic is beyond me...but it does rather point up the inherent failure of our nominating process. I will probably rant more about it at a later date, but it seriously does seem like we're voting for homecoming queen, not PRESIDENT OF THE BLOODY UNITED STATES. I half expect one of the candidates to finish by blurting out "SAN DIMAS HIGH FOOTBALL RULES!!"
I'll be in the UK and France next month. If you ever wanted to harbor asylum seekers, write to You Treasonous Scalawag, in care of Ugly's Bar, Silicon Valley, California.
What sources do you count on for national news coverage? How about international and local news?
Funny you should ask...I just set the TiVo yesterday to get BBC World News America on a nightly basis. I find myself more and more reliant on the BBC for international news, whether on the sat-radio or online. Local news comes almost exclusively from the SFGate and Mercury-News sites. And national news mostly comes from the online versions of the NY Times, Washington Post, and a couple other local papers from cities in which I used to live. All in all, I routinely see about six different newspaper sites from around the country on a daily basis.
I don't get my national news off the TV, that's for damn sure. Every time I watch a national newscast from an American channel - cable or broadcast - I can feel my IQ dropping. I'll spare you a re-run of my usual rant, but short version: if it's two people yelling about the news, if it's comment or "analysis" of the news, or if it involves "celebrities," then you are NOT watching The News.
Too early for bourbon?
What issues do you look forward to hearing about in the upcoming U.S. Presidential debates?
I don't think it matters, because political coverage is now being done by wannabe sportswriters who are more consumed with the final score than what actually happened. Also, it's !-ing preposterous that we're already on over a dozen debates when we don't even have a caucus until January - people should be declaring now instead of over a year into the thing.
That said, the things I would really like to hear about: net neutrality, fair use, digital rights management, domestic infrastructure, and why everything we buy is being made by a Communist dictatorship that has our collective balls in a vice, but I still can't buy a decent Cuban Cohiba Siglo VI without breaking the law.
